Folk traditions: The historic awareness and the attachment to own roots is a fundamental element of the Sardinian culture and we can see that in the large numbers of folk traditions in the whole island. We show you some between the most interesting events taking place in Oristano area. If you want to know smaller traditions and numerous village feasts just ask to the touristic office.

The Carnival in Oristano:Sa Sartiglia On the last Sunday of Carnival and on the following Tuesday, the Sartiglia Tournament is held in Oristano. It comes from a saracenic military tournament. It has been learnt from Christian knights and it had been introduced in Europe from Pietro d'Aragona troops in the 1323. Of these two races, one is organized by the gremio of contadini (peasant's guild) and the other by the Gremio of falegnami (carpenter's guild): now they are supported by the comitato of Sartiglia. A century- old custom rich in historical, religious and civic elements is thus brought to life once again.

The Enrobing: At about 12 o'clock on the Sunday and on the Tuesday the Master of Cerimony of the Tournament (the componidori) is ready in the house of the president of the gremio called Maggiorali. The componidori climbs on to a chair on to a low table where is dressed in full tournament array by a group of young girls wearing the traditional Sardinian costume, under the supervision of an elderly woman (Sa massaia manna). And he can't get down until the end of the tournament. Each garments he wears has a symbolic meaning, from the shirt to the rubbens wrapping his arms, from the mask on his face to the black top-hat.
After the enrobing, the componidori mounts his beautiful decorated horse directly from the table he's standing. He got from the Maggiorali a bunch of violets "sa pippia de maiu" with it he bless the crowd. The young girls cost handfuls of corn and flowers, and the massaia manna utters the invoking prayer "Santu Giuanni t'assistada" (may St. John help you) and "santu giuseppi t'assistada" (may St. Joseph help you) because St. John and St. Joseph are the patron Saints of the peasant's guild and carpenter's guild.
The Procession: After the enrobing the compondori is joined by two horsemen, one on either side, and by about 120 knights arranged in there. Wearing traditional Sardinian and Spanish costume with bright, warm colours and the mask they walk with trumpeters drummers, members of the guild until the place where the tournament will start.

The Tournament: A begin with the crossing of swords performed by the componidori and his assistant under the star, the symbol of sartiglia, because the purpose of every knight is spurring his horse to a mad gallop and trying to pierce the sword through the central hole of a Silver star, hanging from a green ribbon suspended in mid-air- This performance is started by the Componidori and then by each horseman.

Up

The ride of Sedilo: The Ardia
From 5 to 7 July of every year the Ardia takes place. It's a ride, but for mostly people it is a religious feast to pay honour to St. Costantino, the emperor. They want to commemorate the Massenzio victory and the edict of church liberty to stop the persecutions against Christian people. It's really strong the link between religiosity and agonistic spirit. In fact the ride is an undertaking of brave and ability of the horseman to fight to defence the cross, so it's very difficult to separate the Christian rite from the pagan custom. Also because during the ride days, on the St. Costantino sanctuary, where the same Ardia takes place next to, there are religious celebrations, liturgies and confessions.

The ride: On 6 July, in the afternoon, the master of the ride (the flag-bearer or "pandela madzore"or first pandela) followed by many horsemen got from the priest the yellow brocade banner called "sa candela de Sant'antina"(the candle of st antioco) that he must defend during the ride avoiding that any horseman could overtake him. To achieve this purpose, also using the strength, he's helped by some horsemen called "sas iscortas" chosen from the different "pandelas" The master of the ride chooses two horsemen, one on either side (second and third "pandela"or flag-bearer) taking a red and a white flag. The parish, the mayor, the "pandelas", horsemen, riflemen go through their horses the main road until the "su fronte mannu" next to the sanctuary. They stop to pray in front of the cross and the statue of the Saint. Out of the area where the church is there is "the frontigheddu" the real place where the ride starts.

"Sas iscortas" have already to control the horsemen hindering the "pandelas". The flag bearer choose the right moment to ride full gallop mounting the Costantino Arc which permit to let in the area of the santuary. Some instants later thousand of horsemen move towards the church, they stop some seconds behind the temple just to collect theirs thoughts so the canonical tours around the church. But it's "the first pandela" to decide how many tours to do between the seven estimated. The master of the ride gallop faster and faster between the crowd until to take a daring bend to risk his own and his horse safety. The direction of the ride is now toward "sa muredda" a stone enclosure with a cross in the middle. After a little prayer the horseman make three clockwise tours and the forth anti-clockwise to pray again next to the church. The temple is the final goal of the "first pandela" celebrating St. costantino for his honour they will run the morning after again. Up
